What will it take Africa to develop?

3 min read

Thomas Jefferson compared whites to blacks, in the aspect of faculty, reason and imagination. He was of the view that the memory of both races was equal, but in reasoning much inferior. And in imagination, dull, tasteless and anomalous. He also believed that nature has been less bountiful to African’s in the endowments of the head. (Notes on the State Of Virginia)

What was written by Thomas Jefferson in the 1800s, that the African is inferior in terms of reasoning? Is it true or it was a way to signal African’s that they were better in reasoning.

I want to interrogate Jefferson’s statement to the state of Africa now. Since the independence of the African continent has not yielded fruitful results. And it seems, we are unable to rule ourselves. Africa depends on the billions of dollars given to them each year from the west. And No black-ruled nation has ever effectively governed itself.

Several years after independence there is nothing about the African continent inimical to modern life. All we are noted for is violence, war, poverty, hunger etc. We have had years to modernize and improve ourselves in Africa with full access to modern knowledge and technology. Yet still, we are underdeveloped.

The last country to attain independent on the Africa continent is at least, over twenty years old. It took Japan just about twenty years to modernize from a feudal samurai culture to a fully modern industrial state. Singapore having attained independence in 1963, with over half of African countries attaining independence before Singapore. Yet has become a highly developed marketing economy.

Haiti has been an all-black, independent, Free State since the Napoleonic wars, 200 years ago. Even so, its lifestyle and standard of living perfectly match that of darkest Africa. In those 200 years, it has not progressed an inch. In fact, it has probably regressed since that time. Their neighbours in the Dominican Republic have immensely better statistics than them in all fields. Instead of a failed state, the Dominican Republic takes care of its people, has a working government, and doesn’t need charity. The difference; their population is non-black,

Is it a stroke of strange bad luck or Africans have found themselves on the wrong side of the 21st Century. Or because of the adaptation of the European way of doing things. Perhaps if we had continued on the path built for us by our ancestors. Africans will not be in this situation?

Are we to give in, that truly we are inferior to the white man or do we discover who we are as a people and develop a system that better suits us?

I know that there are a lot of questions but frankly, I don’t have any answers. I worry so much about Africa.

In Conclusion

Our future is uncertain and my utmost concern is; our problem is not the ability not to think for ourselves. Because we all know we have problems but our major problem is the capacity to make the needed change.
